The Shorts

The Shorts

When I first decided I wanted to start sewing, I was in my freshman year of college. I packed up my mom’s Elna sewing machine (the same model I have now, just in a smaller table) and drove it back to college with me. I’m sure my roommate was thrilled to share our tiny, already stuffed dorm room with this noisy machine.Read More »

Cheap Closet: Crazy Thai Shirt

Before Thai Shirt

After Thai ShirtThis shirt has been sitting in my closet for the past two years, and I’ve only worn it once. What a tragedy! I found it in a thrift store in Thailand for $3 and just couldn’t pass up that crazy pattern. Every time I pulled it out of my closet I thought “I’ll just take the sleeves off and it will be perfect,” and back in the closet it went.

I definitely wanted to get rid of all that extra fabric under my arms, and to make it sleeveless so that I could wear a cardigan over it. After cutting the sleeves off and taking the sides in a little, I tried out the rolled hem foot. That was an adventure, but I think I did pretty well.

Relatively simple change, but I’m happy with the way it turned out! Now I’m ready for the weather to get colder so I can layer it.

my new sewing machine

My Newest Toy

My new sewing machineLook at that beautiful machine. That machine has lived in so many places: Georgia, Michigan, Texas, Arizona and finally Texas again. My grandma decided to give me this sewing machine as a late graduation present. She actually drove for three days round trip from Arizona just to bring it to me! Now that’s dedication. Thanks Grandma!

I have been so excited for the past three months waiting for her to bring it. Taylor (the husband) is probably super tired of hearing me say “when my sewing machine gets here…” I have countless projects I want to do and blog about. A lot of those projects are just altering things from my closet, but eventually I hope to branch out into making my own clothes!

I’ve always been super fascinated with sewing. It’s probably because you have complete control of how it turns out. You get to pick the color, fabric, hem-length and whatever else to make the perfect piece. I have dreams of a closet full of dresses, skirts and shirts that I made myself!

Check back for the results of my first project soon!

bear sleeping bag

Feeling Inspired: Bears

bear sleeping bagI can’t even handle having this guy hanging out in my house again. My grandma made me this sleeping bag when I was about three years old, and it was easily one of the best parts of my childhood. Those paws are little hand pockets. What could get better than that? It’s only here on loan because my mom won’t let me have it permanently, not that I’d need it. Actually, if I still fit in it I’d probably use it all the time! Anyway, It’s just here for reference because I really want to make one for my nephew for Christmas. He’s the perfect age and I honestly can’t think of a better way to break in my new/old sewing machine than a bear sleeping bag. Can you?

My very own blog

photo of me

A blog. I’m finally writing my own blog. It’s only natural that this would happen sooner or later. I journal every single day. The next step is obviously a blog. Let’s get real, I’m writing this blog more for myself than anyone else. I love reading/looking at blogs, and I like to keep track of where I’ve been. That’s what this blog will be for me.

As for what I’ll write about, I think it will be a mix of things. Currently I’m really excited about sewing. I have a long list of clothes in my closet waiting to be altered to perfection! I have no training in sewing, so I’ll be learning as I go.

I also enjoy photography. Hopefully I’ll learn a little bit more about my camera while documenting my sewing adventures.

There might also be a little bit about marriage, food, books or other random things. Like I said, this blog is for me to document my life. I love the idea of being able to look back and see how I’ve grown.
